What the Juniors Say About It

I also realized that miracles truly can happen. Film people staying together in one location for more than a week and no one seriously complains?! How is that possible? – It was an AMAZING experience in an AMAZING location with AMAZING people!!!! I was blown away by the passion and commitment that every single person brought to this event. - Denis, can I become a lifelong participant of Production Value?

Talking with each other about the script, the schedule and the budget made my work easier. Also this is something that is lacking in the Dutch ‘film industry’, and I think changes have to be made to make Dutch film productions more professional and in the end, hopefully make better films.

The seniors do not only impress with the movies they have worked on, they also are impressive individuals. They have generously shared their knowledge and experience. It was strenuous and utterly intense, but at the same time it was professionally invigorating, exhilarating, simply a rejuvenation.

I loved that the program of Production Value was built up in such a creative way that all ideas could meet in a safe atmosphere. It is wonderful to experience the ideal world from time to time. I am very thankful it showed me how this process of filmmaking can really work in terms of co-operation between budgeting and scheduling. It made me want to be better, think bigger, fly higher! So, to sum it up in short : Production Value was like a ride on a roller-coaster – a bit scary but extremely tempting at first, wild and crazy while it lasted and in the end an experience that you wouldn’t change for anything!

It’s absolutely an amazing and unique project. It pumped blood to my veins. It kick-started me more than anything ever before. I was inspired by the entire Senior team. I was trying to gain as much as I could. Every single day was so hard, I was so tired but at the same time I was empowered by the spectacular energy which was hurrying me ahead.

The workshop’s ability to drive creativity, consideration and a great sense of collaboration is awe-inspiring. It is not just about scheduling, but about becoming a bridge between the Director and The Producer. To become a useful creative partner for them both. I certainly believe how useful our job can be when developing projects from early days.

I think the idea of this workshop is simple and genius at the same time. It’s a perfect place for people like me to fill in the gaps what you have in your knowledge. I feel really confident running the set, but I knew my scheduling part was not so strong. Production Value was the perfect place to improve that.

During the first days I was feeling like being on a real job, because the pressure is there – if we don't put it'on us by ourselves, it just doesn’t work. But there was one big difference – we were not assigned by a producer, we were working for ourselves, so the outcome is realistic, hopefully well-thought through and sets a good base for realizing an existing film project. We were independent.

After that week I got the feeling that there are more people like me out there. ADs who passionately battle the circumstances, hoping to make it possible for the director to bring their creative vision to life, without leaving the producer bankrupt. Sometimes it ́s a lonely job but it ́s certainly worth it and now I know people I can ask for true AD help if I need it.

It was a challenge to keep up with the assignment. It was at a high level that I had never experienced before. Suddenly I felt like a beginner. I had to make up a whole new structure regarding planning. Co-producing and incentives were new to me. And at the same time struggling with the new software that I ́m not familiar with.

We had the chance to present our approach to the producer and the director and got the feedback and suggestions on how to continue. This meeting (almost 2 days) was very valuable, especially to understand the production and cultural differences between four countries, in our case German, Spanish, British and Estonian. This is the experience what you can’t get from any school. This is the experience you can get only in real world, with real projects and real people or in Production Value. The only difference is that in real world you can’t really have the option to fail. In Production Value, you have the “soft” way to find the right or better path on the journey of filmmaking.
