PV16 What the Juniors Say About It

PV16 Jonna Enroth

Jonna Enroth, Junior Line Producer, Finland
I loved every second of the workshop and it has given me so much new energy towards my work - it was exactly what I needed at this stage of my career. I find it very hard to put into words how much the case studies and coffee hours with the Seniors affected me. The brutally honest stories of the challenges and problems of their productions were truly eye-opening. I feel very privileged that they shared such personal stories with us and it was encouraging and comforting to understand that some issues in the film industry really are universal.

Before I came to the workshop, I only had a vague understanding about the line producer’s work. I knew what they were doing, but nothing about the process or most importantly, my part of the process as an AD. Production Value has broadened my understanding of a functioning pre-production. What it takes to lead throughout a production. I wish there was one more week of the workshop where we reversed the roles.

Stefanie Hamman, Junior Assistant Director, Netherlands
This workshop made me a stronger person, not only as a 1st AD but also as Stefanie! The awareness that I got into a next layer every day, the coffee-breaks with the best stories, sharing knowledge and knowing that you’re not alone and share the same problems, the way we were supported by all the Seniors, the lectures & case studies… It truly was an amazing journey!!!

To place a group of workaholics into an isolated surrounding, grant them excellent working conditions, put them into pairs, assign them a project that is slightly more demanding than anything they have previously worked on, set a deadline and face them with a reality check - is a fabulous experiment. The last part of the Workshop in particular - presenting the results to producers and directors - gave the project a new dimension. Not only in terms of responsibility, but also in terms of additional energy push when energies start running low.

Production Value was already recommended to me several times. In the end, it was even better than I had anticipated. The workshop offers the possibility to meet people from around Europe that somehow are in the same position as you. I’ve never been surrounded by people that so much think alike, who take responsibility the same way and like to organize and structure whatever they are in. That was amazing!

I did greatly enjoy the „mandatory“ coffee breaks with the other ADs and seniors, I found them just as instructive as the projects themselves. Hearing the other juniors’ challenges, thoughts and questions and have access to two experienced senior ADs – sometimes with opposing views - really was a unique opportunity.

I applied to Production Value with a very clear purpose: I wanted to take my skills as 1st AD to a new level. When I wrote it in my motivation letter, I thought it sounds a bit too ambitious. I was sure that such a leap could not be achieved in one week time. The PV16 workshop proved me wrong. Thinking back to the workshop, I really believe it has brought me to a new, deeper level.

It can be difficult to know whether you’re doing the right thing as a Line Producer because you have so many responsibilities and most of your learning is done on the job, where you don’t have another Line Producer to learn from. It was really invaluable to be able to speak to our Senior Line Producers about some of their more difficult experiences, how they approached tricky projects and situations. Since a large part of a Line Producer’s role is managing people and situations, it’s reassuring to know that even the most experienced Line Producers encounter new and challenging circumstances.

PV16 Rikard Waxin

Rikard Waxin, Junior Assistant Director, Sweden
This workshop has given me a completely updated 1st AD toolbox that I will be able to use in my future work. It maintained a high international level and developed my skills in planning, organization and leadership. I feel that it has brought me more confidence in my profession, as well as a number of new contacts and friends in the European film industry.

Production Value is the most intense learning experience in my life. It’s the mother of all workshops.

The workshop strengthened my back and I’m looking forward to work on the next project with the new gained knowledge.

Along the week you open your eyes and mind and you realize that there's not a properly way of breaking and scheduling a film but many different ways, all of them valid. You share your opinion and ideas with other brave brains, companions from other countries that are AD's like you and that enriches you for life. These chitchats around the coffee machine sharing our fears, newest creative solutions or great ideas are one of the best presents that could have been offered to us.
