Pitch
Compositing - a key step in the image-making process (a mixture of sources, green screen, incrustation, special effects, editing...). Combining theory with practice, this seminar will bring participants being active in animation film or postproduction up to date on current tools and techniques of the trade.

Today compositing has become a key step in the image-making process (a mixture of sources, green screen, incrustation, special effects, editing…). Combining theory with practice, this seminar will bring participants up to date on current tools and techniques of the trade.

Scheduled for Day 1, Laurent-Paul Robert, known for case studies linked to his own practice (HARRY POTTER, THE DARK NIGHT RISES, SKYFALL, THE TREE OF LIFE…), will treat participants to an exceptional presentation of his work methods, revealing various tricks of the trade with respect to the following topics:

  • the importance of preparation and follow-up in film shooting
  • the choice of the work space (3D / 2.5D / 2D)
  • "green screen" versus "no green screen"
  • "projection mapping" versus "3D"
  • work flow and costs
  • today's tools and tomorrow's trends

Thus, at the end of Day 1, participants will have acquired the capacity to more efficiently define the techniques applicable to a film's creation, no matter the film project budget.

Day 2 is devoted to hands-on training: under the guidance of Laurent- Paul Robert, participants will be asked to apply their newly-learned skills and knowledge to concrete cases.

The exercises focus on the production chain as a whole (pre-production, shooting and post-production). Rather than the use of a specific software, the seminar wants the participants to develop the right reflexes and to improve their work. With this goal in mind, the softwares used are After Effects and Photoshop.

This seminar addresses the needs of all persons working in the realms of special effects, motion design and/or animation.

Speakers

Laurent-Paul Robert
A native of Neuchâtel, the speaker began his artistic career in his home city, within a graffiti artist collective, but also started to use digital technology in his art work. After spending a few years in Slovenia, where he developed his interest in the latest technologies (publicity, video games), he emigrated to London. There he pursued not only an artistic career, but also a career (as variously technical director, compositor, 3D- and VFX-Supervisor) with several film production companies (‹The Mill› and then ‹Double Negative Films›). In the latter capacity, he became involved in such major productions as, among others: JAMES BOND, HARRY POTTER, HELLBOY, THE DARK NIGHT RISES, THE TREE OF LIFE…. Today, vastly and solidly experienced, Laurent- Paul spends the greater part of his energy and time as an independent Effects Supervisor, working on many projects in conjunction with the ‹LipSync› post-production services firm based in London…
