Matte painting is one of filmmaking's oldest special effects techniques. Digital compositing has afforded it a new life: whether for real-life or animated films or even video games, the process has proven it can be very economical for creating environments or making changes to existing settings (adding or modifying various elements on the set). Matte painting applies to all styles of animation (drawings, stop motion, CGI), but also to real-life images and to video games.
During this hands-on workshop, participants will be given a chance to work with one of the masters in the field, Jaime Jasso (avatar, iron man, xmen, super 8, rango, warhammer, dragon age …). Featuring examples out of films on which Jasso has worked and practical exercises under his supervision, the workshop will introduce matte painting techniques or, as necessary, enable participants to improve their already existing knowledge of them.
Basic knowledge of the Photoshop and After Effects programs is necessary for this workshop. Some experience with 3ds Max would be helpful, but is not a requisite.
Jaime Jasso
Leading Digital Matte Artist, Industrial Light and Magic, LUCASFILM LTD.
Born in 1974 in Guadalajara, Mexico, Jaime became involved in creative arts (watercolors, oils, acrylics, airbrush…) already as a child. As a fan of science fiction, he began drawing for comics, learned more about visual effects for film and left brush and colors aside in favor of technical art.
His grasp of imagery blossomed in the realms of matte painting and concept art. Rapidly, he found himself collaborating on internationally acclaimed projects in the fields of video games, advertising and filmmaking (see above)
