A film editor and sound designer, Larry Sider is known for the emphasis he places on integrating creative sound production into a broad range of visual styles. He has worked in a variety of cinema and television genres, covering animation, fiction and documentary.
In his work, Larry Sider considers the sounds that accompany the visuals not as a combination of disparate disciplines, but as a unified and coherent whole. The basic assumption is that the soundtrack is perceived as a continuum by the audience; that music, dialogue, effects and atmospheres are instruments in the sonification of the film, comparable perhaps to the strings, brass, woodwinds and percussion in an orchestra.
With this background in mind, workshop participants will explore how sound can subtly shift the ambiance of a film from reality to fantasy and through greater or lesser degrees of naturalism. They will all work on the same short piece of animation, experimenting with different tracks and ways of mixing. The work will be done swiftly, with continuous analysis and feedback.
By exploring the film's particular reality - the complex relationship between image and effects, atmospheres and music - the participants will become aware of how an audience connects with a film and its underlying meaning and emotion.
The final results will be included in a talk on THE TEXTURE OF ANIMATION which Larry Sider will give at FANTOCHE 07, where he is also a member of the Jury.

Larry Sider has elevated the profile of screen sound to a new level through his annual symposium, the School of Sound, an international four-day event exploring the use of sound on the screen. Until his appointment to the NFTS he was a senior lecturer at the Surrey Institute of Art and Design and a visiting lecturer at the Royal College of Art, the Royal College of Music and the London Institute. His extensive collaboration with the award-winning animators The Quay Brothers includes films such as STREET OF CROCODILES and the live-action INSTITUTE BENJAMENTA, and he has also worked with the animators Simon Pummell and Ruth Lingford. Other credits include Patrick Keiller's surreal blend of fiction and documentary, Chris Austin's musical biography of jazz pianist Abdullah Ibrahim, THE BROTHER WITH PERFECT TIMING, and many more.
